2023 Summer Institute Personal Finance: Session 1

Objective

By the end of the session, teachers will be able to effectively sequence and teach key financial literacy topics such as income, taxes, saving, investing, credit management, risk, and insurance, while anticipating and addressing common student misconceptions and pitfalls.

Teachers will come away with a collection of resources, lesson plans, and assessments that can be readily implemented in their classrooms, enhancing their pedagogical practices and providing students with engaging learning experiences in the field of financial literacy. They will also have opportunities to collaborate with other educators, sharing best practices and exploring simulations and online tools that can be integrated into their fall curriculum.

Description

On Day 3, Wednesday, July 19th, Financial Literacy Day will kick off with an engaging morning session from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., led by Lead Facilitator Alex Lamon. The session will focus on course sequencing, brushing up on content, anticipating and managing common student misconceptions and pitfalls, content specific pedagogy strategies, and time for teacher collaboration. 

The general topics covered in this session include: income, taxes, saving, investing, credit and credit management, risk and insurance. Teachers will come away with strategies for teaching specific activities within these financial literacy standards to their students and share best practices with others.
